Room to Read seeks to transform the lives of millions of children in developing countries by focusing on literacy and gender equality in education. Working in collaboration with local communities, partner organizations and governments, we develop literacy skills and a habit of reading among primary school children, and support girls to complete secondary school with the relevant life skills to succeed in school and beyond.

We are non-governmental, non-religious and work with many local NGOs and community based organizations to implement our programs. We currently work in Bangladesh, Cambodia, India, Laos, Nepal, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Vietnam, and Zambia – countries with a desperate lack of resources to educate their children. Since our inception, Room to Read’s worldwide team has impacted over 7.8 million children by constructing more than 1,600 schools, establishing over 15,000 libraries, publishing 874 new children’s book titles in 27 local languages, and reaching over 20,000 girls through our Girls’ Education program.

Room to Read has an annual budget of approximately US$43.7 million and our global staff numbers over 600. Our global headquarters is located in San Francisco, and we have smaller fundraising offices in Delhi, New York, Hong Kong, London, Mumbai, Sydney, and Tokyo. We have an Asia Regional Office located in New Delhi and program offices in Colombo, Dar es Salaam, Dhaka, Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Kathmandu, Lusaka, New Delhi, Pretoria, Phnom Penh, and Vientiane.

Position Overview:

The GEP Program Associate’s overall responsibility is to work in team work with respective program officer and program manager as well as GEP members to ensure the program activities are on time implemented and have them monitored. 

The PA will work closely with schools, students and teachers in the program areas.  .

GEP PA will be working mainly in Ho Chi Minh city & Long An province where the Girls Education Program is being operated. She may travel for work to other provinces or cities upon the request of the organization.

Duties & Responsibilities:

The position will work under the direct management of the GEP Program Manager and Program Officer; specifically she will be responsible for:

GEP administration:

  • Working with GEP PO/ PA in each area to collect and synthesis 
  • Updating Documentations (activities, photo  for GEP activities)

Girl’s activities:

  • Planning for logistics support to program activities: Life skill Education, Mentoring, Material support, Stakeholder engagement, Partnership with local government/other INGOs and Research, Assessment and Evaluation.
  • Organize and monitoring in Life skills, Career orientation, Award ceremony, Summer camps, Filed trip, Parent meeting, Training for SM.
  • Home visits: learn girl’s family circumstances, intervene high risk cases, assist SM to solving problems.
  • Participate in any other activities which may be required to be undertaken to fulfill the objectives of the organization.

Working with partner:

  • School Monitoring: Meeting with principals, teachers, SMs, girls.
  • Contact with accountant’s school to pay school fee, tutoring
  • Handling communication letters to girls and partners when needed
  • Organize quarterly meeting with partner and taking minutes.
  • Training for SM/ partner/girls and coaching SMs and monitoring SMs work.

Monitoring & reporting:

  • Managing girls situation, updating girls’ profile
  • Photos collection 
  • Taking date on girls’ education performance:  Attendance performance, tutoring, academic result.
  • Maintaining & updating records related to girls, parents. (GSD)
  • Synthesis of monthly SM report on girls  to PO 
  • Taking meeting minutes

Donor/guest relations:

  • Administrative services to donor visit:  accommodation, meals, travel.
  • Case writing & photos

Budget management:

  • Monitoring actual expenses by SMs.
  • Activity actual expenses report. Monitoring and reporting of monthly spending
  • Making advance/payment request and ensuring receipts/bills legally collected
  • Transfer salary SM.
  • Forecast monthly budget/ quarterly budget

Office work and others

  • Participating in RTR meeting, monthly GEP meeting 
  • Support team members when the works required in respective areas
  • Assist PO in office work.

Qualifications

  • A university degree in related fields: either sociology, women’s studies, social work, pedagogic management
  • A minimum of 2 years of professional experiences, in girls’ education would be an advantage
  • Prior experience working with schools, teachers, administrators and government officials
  • Good knowledge and understanding of gender issues in education
  • Strong planning, supervisory, and management skills
  • Ability to travel frequently to target provinces
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills in English and Vietnamese
  • Good working experience with education programs/projects
  • Good working experience with local partners, government and other INGOs.

The position will be working mainly in Ho Chi Minh City, and frequent travels to other provinces or cities upon the request of the organization.
