Location: Oxford University Clinical Research Unit, Ho Chi Minh City, Viet Nam
Hours of work: Full time (Monday – Friday). Working hours are 37.5 hours per week. Overtime may be required on weekends and occasional travel to other  provinces.
Tenure: Contract for one year, include of 2 month probation with possibility of extension.

Oxford University Clinical Research Unit (OUCRU)

We are part of the Welcome Programme in Asia which aims to have a positive and significant impact on global health through the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of infectious diseases, building scientific capacity in the region and by influencing regional and global public health policy. We meet these aims through a synergistic network of research units, led by OUCRU in HCMC (in partnership with Hospital for Tropical Diseases HCMC) and Hanoi (in partnership with National Hospital for Tropical Diseases), Vietnam, and incorporating the Eijkman-Oxford Clinical Research Unit (EOCRU) in Jakarta, Indonesia, and OUCRU-Nepal in Kathmandu. Public Engagement at OUCRU

In order to make our research relevant and accessible to the communities in which we work we have an active and varied public engagement programme in each of the OUCRU units. Our objectives are to organize creative and participatory events with the public to build trust and promote better understanding of biomedical science. We partner with research communities in all the countries that OUCRU works, to facilitate dialogue about science and clinical research. We have developed a schools engagement programme in HCMC and Hanoi, which aims to enable Vietnamese school students and young science enthusiasts to develop their scientific competency and potential through informal learning experiences and having interactions with scientists.

Job summary

The position holder will work under overall leadership of Head of PE and line management of the Schools Engagement Manager to fulfil the main responsibilities below:

  • Coordinating engagement activities and projects that involve participation of teachers and scientists to promote science in schools for primary and secondary school students such as: science clubs, science festivals, science contests etc,…
  • Leading the PE School Ambassadors programme to enable stakeholders (ambassadors, teachers, scientists) to innovatively working together with the aim of making science more accessible to Vietnamese school students across the country.
  • Facilitating material development workshops, meetings and discussions with teachers, ambassadors and scientists.
  • As part of the SE team and wider OUCRU PE team, to support a wide range of PE activities and events as needed.

This position is based in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. However, there will be requirements to travel within Vietnam to support other SE projects, events as well as to attend conferences overseas.

The Schools Engagement Coordinator is expected to work as a team member of the schools engagement team to deliver a variety of assignments but also to be involved with other SE projects. These include the following:

  • Organizing and implementing assigned SE projects in collaboration with PE-schools partners, which including selecting schools, inviting scientists to participate in activities, arraging logistics, running actual activities with involved stakeholders, drafting contracts with partners and suppliers,...
  • Working closely with school teachers to support and oversee the operations of science clubs for primary and secondary school students that under management of OUCRU-PE in Ho Chi Minh City office.
  • Recruting PE-schools ambassadors, building and coordinating the action plans of this ambassadors group as well as mornitoring its progress.
  • Designing and running meetings, workshops and discussions with teachers, scientists and partners.
  • Designing and conducting evaluation exercises to collect feedback of participants in every single SE activity organized.
  • Reporting on evaluation exercises conducted and budget spent on each SE activity to the SE Manager.
  • Working closely with SE team to draft end year evaluation plan, prepare reports and build SE plans annualy.
  • Proposing inputs of ideas for futher development of OUCRU PE-schools engagement work.
  • Translating and proofing readingdocuments about science and engagement for young audiences.
  • Other tasks to support the wider SE team and PE team, as required either by Head of PE or SE Manager.

Selection criteria

  • Bachelor degree in education, development study, public health, or social science.
  • At least 5 years of working experience, preferably in education and development sector, iNGOs.
  • Experienced in working directly with governmental officials, project partners and external collaborators.
  • Experienced in organizing and facilitating workshops, training courses for different groups of participant.
  • Understanding of monitoring and evaluation
  • Ability to speak and write in English fluently.
  • Ability to work on own tasks, initiatives as well as a member of a team.
  • Good at organization, management and presentation skills.
  • Critical, inovative thinking and open to new approaches and ideas.
