Rice Husk Valorisation Expert for CTCN - UNIDO project: Bio-waste minimization and valorisation for low carbon production in the rice sector - Vietnam

SNV Netherlands Development Organization has been working in Vietnam since 1995. Using market based approaches, SNV is committed to reducing poverty by catalyzing environmentally sustainable solutions for the poor through agriculture, energy and water, sanitation & hygiene.

SNV was selected by UNIDO and the Climate Technology Center and Network (CTCN) to provide technical assistance to MoNRE on rice husk valorisation optimization. The overall aim of the TA is to improve the economic performance of rice mills but also reduce its carbon footprint by: a) substituting the use of (imported) fossil fuels (coal) and b) displacing the GHG emissions which are generated under the current disposal practices of unutilized rice husks.

The main activities to be covered include the development of a valorization tool business models, a bankable business plan and access to finance options for selected rice mills or other companies in the Mekong delta region.

As part of this assignment SNV is looking for a rice husk valorization expert. The expert is preferably based in the HCMC office of SNV.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze viable technologies for rice husk valorization that can improve economic performance of rice millers or other companies that can use husk as energy or fuel source
  • Provide inputs to the business models and lead activities related to analysis of the valorization technology (operation and maintenance, lifespan, CAPEX and OPEX) including selection and comparison of technologies within and where applicable outside Vietnam.
  • Assist in the identification of financing options for the business models, including domestic, international, bilateral and multilateral financing options with focus on climate financing options that are accessible through MoNRE
  • Provide advisory services on value chain, market linkages to the rice mills on the valorisation of rice husk.
  • Monthly of bi-monthly travel to Hanoi or HCMC depending on the duty station of the specialist.

The candidate ideally has the following profile

  • MSc degree in engineering, environment or a related degree with considerable experience with rice husk valorization technologies
  • At least 5 years’ experience in a role related to rice husk valorization, i.e. steam, CHP, pelleting, briquetting or other technologies
  • Good experience working with the private sector in a business-related environment
  • Experience with the development of business models
  • Excellent English and Vietnamese communication skills, both in writing and speaking
  • Flexible, motivated and committed to improving rural livelihoods
  • Able to travel for a period of 1 or 2 weeks to rural areas

Outputs

  • Reporting on the value proposition, technology description, technology operation, human resource requirement, value chain, scalability, CAPEX and OPEX and complete chain of logistical configurations and assessment of by-products for 3 selected business models.
  • Reporting on the risk management of a business model for a selected company including a SWOT analysis on the technology and market risk analysis and exit strategy.
  • Reporting on the regulatory environment related to the selected technologies, including permits, related policies that affect the project.

Duration: The expected input required spans 3 months in the period of mid April 2017 to July 2017.
