Background:

The Geo Informatics Center* (GIC) at the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) and the Sahana Software Foundation** (Sahana) invite applications from qualified candidates for an anticipated UN­ESCAP funded project on applications of Information Communication Technology (ICT) in Disaster Management. The project titled CAP­on­a­Map will be housed at AIT, but implemented in the Maldives and the Philippines.

Duration of the project is 18 months and it is expected to commence soon.

GIC­AIT and Sahana are looking for a self­motivated and quality­conscious Software Developer to be employed as a Researcher at GIC­AIT. An initial contract of one year will be given with a probation period of three months. Upon satisfactory performance (evaluated at the end of the first year), the contract will be further extended to the end of the project.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Under the direct supervision of the Program Manager, the incumbent shall be responsible for implementing the project in the target countries (Maldives and Philippines). S/he will hold the following duties and responsibilities:

  • Developing and customizing the Sahana software;
  • Work as the Administrator for the Sahana software installations;
  • Become the “Technical Lead” on the following software products:
  1. Improve the interface between Sahana and OpenStreetMap;
  2. Improve Sahana's data gathering, exporting, re­importing and visualization capabilities;
  3. Integrate QGIS/GRASS with Sahana Eden;
  4. Develop and manage WMS using GeoServer, as well as developing a REST APIs for Sahana Eden interoperability and control of a GeoServer;
  5. Additional responsibilities as necessary.
  • Design and improve Sahana’s capabilities for post disaster situation monitoring and mapping.
    “Engage with the Sahana Community” through sharing code on Github and initiating/responding to discussions.
  • Contribute all new developments under the project to Sahana software repository.

Qualifications and Experiences:

  • Bachelors’ or Masters’ Degree or equivalent in Information Communication Technology, Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related fields;
  • At least 1+ years of work experience after the first degree.
  • Proven skills in programming (Python and other languages) and software development;
  • Sound knowledge of Information Technology; specifically with web technologies (Web2Py) involving HTML/JS/CSS, XML and SQL (relational databases), and other relevant tools and utilities.
  • Some basic understanding of the GIS and Interactive Maps (WebGIS).
  • Experience with documentation and producing user guides with recent writing samples

Salary will be given commensurate with the qualifications and experiences of the candidate.
