BACKGROUND

TRAFFIC, the wildlife trade monitoring network, works to ensure that trade in wild animals and plants is not a threat to the conservation of nature. It actively monitors and investigates wildlife trade and provides information to diverse audiences worldwide as a basis for effective conservation policies and programmes. TRAFFIC is a strategic alliance of the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) and International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

JOB DESCRIPTION

Purpose of Job

The main function of this position is to communicate all TRAFFIC in Viet Nam’s efforts to the public, partners and others, and will also play a role in the presentation of data and development and design of communication materials.

Major Activities

The communication officer is expected to implement a wide range of communication activities under the leadership of the Head of Office in liaison with the TRAFFIC staff in Viet Nam, Malaysia and Cambridge, UK. Expertise in communication to a wide audience and in different formats and forums, such as hard-copy, newspapers, television, and multi-media is required.

The main tasks of the Communication Officer will include, but not limited to the following:

  • Strengthen or grow the relationship with media to acquire more exposure for the project and alert media about project activities;
  • Communicates the work of TRAFFIC including:
    • Design/develop high-quality communication materials (press release, briefing, leaflets, brochure, fact sheet, etc.) to distribute to external audiences.
    • Administer TRAFFIC’s Facebook, Youtube account and other social media tools.
    • Development of visual communication – e.g. infographs and presentations
    • Manage and archive all communication items and links
    • Input in technical reports to donors.
    • Support in the production of film, video or other audio-visual items.
  • Ensures effective communication and liaison at multiple levels:
    • Within the Vietnam and global TRAFFIC / WWF network, TRAFFIC International.
    • With principal partners in non-governmental organizations, government agencies, academics, industry, and the donor communities.
    • With the society at large including, private sector, target audience of the strategy and the wider community.
    • Conservation agencies and stakeholders appropriate.
  • Stays informed of NGO communication trend and strategy in conservation and wildlife trade;
  • Identifies and engages influential communication agents of change;
  • Contributes creative idea to execute and report project objectives;
  • Undertakes other tasks relevant to the project as assigned.

Major Outputs/Key Performance Indicators

  • Ensure media reach for all efforts of TRAFFIC in Viet Nam and internationally
  • Delivery communication items as per agreed deadlines and expenditure, as part of the project team as outlined in the workplan working with the team in Viet Nam.
  • Attend team meetings providing updates on project progress and liaise with team on streamlining the wide range of project efforts.
  • Reporting on project communication progress to relevant staff and Head of Office when required.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor or Master Degree in communication, public relation, journalism, social science or international study.
  • Minimum 4 years of practical work experience in communication, journalism, media, or related field; devising, formulating and implementing communication strategies, preferably in an NGO or conservation environment.
  • Minimum 2 years of intensive engagement in all aspects of communication.
  • An interest in and commitment to conservation and combatting wildlife trade.
  • Experience in graphic design software, InDesign, Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator, and of the Microsoft Office applications
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, both written and verbal, and ability to communicate complex issues in a clear manner to a wide variety of audiences across diverse channels.
  • Sound relationship management.
  • Native English speaker, or Vietnamese person with high advanced level of English.
