The position offers individuals with strong communication and advocacy skills a rare opportunity to enter the international development sector, to develop and expand their skills in high level policy-advocacy, to establish and build networks with a range of influential Vietnamese, regional and international organizations and individuals and, most importantly, to protect Vietnamese workers and communities from preventable illness and death.

Background: Union Aid Abroad (APHEDA) was established in 1984 as the international solidarity, aid and development agency of the Australian Council of Trade Unions (ACTU). APHEDA is non-profit, secular, and progressive, supporting partnerships for socio-economic development and trade union and labor-based programs in developing countries around the world.

Since 1991, APHEDA’s Vietnam program has made major contributions to national efforts to advance improve worker’s rights and conditions through strengthening unions and empowering women to claim their rights. Since 2009, APHEDA has been supporting the advocacy efforts of the Vietnam General Confederation of Labor, National Institute of labor protection (VGCL), Heath Environment Management Agency (HEMA), CEMA and Civil Society organization (VNBAN, NGO IC, IRECO) to end the use of asbestos in Vietnam, to end the preventable deaths and illness from asbestos related diseases.

Union Aid Abroad APHEDA is looking for Communication and Advocacy Specialist to support project implementation, communication and advocacy activities. This senior position will work closely with the APHEDA Vietnam Country Manager and the APHEDA Asbestos Regional Coordinator.

Key duties and responsibilities:

  • Communications and Advocacy
    • Develop and implement advocacy strategies including coordinating with stakeholders, partners
    • Prepare press releases, media briefs, reports, talking points, newsletters, brochures and organise advocacy campaigns
    • Provides technical briefings and reports to APHEDA and partners to ensure message and information consistency a across all reporting and match with project objectives
    • Create policy engagement opportunities and participate in strategic policy forums and event to promote APHEDA’s work
    • Plan and facilitate opportunities for face to face engagement of key stakeholders including advocacy planning meetings, policy dialogue meetings, technical briefing meetings, awareness raising and information sessions.
    • Support in reviewing the advocacy plan to identify different approaches to achieve project objectives with Asbestos Regional Coordinator
  • Project Cycle Management
    • Plan and manage effective project activities, events and meetings related to campaign objectives and broader APHEDA program goals.
    • Assist in the development of annual work plans for monitoring progress activities and achievements and regular updates.
    • Prepare regular monthly, quarterly and annual reports to the APHEDA Country Manager and Regional Asbestos Coordinator, including regular review and reflection meetings based on reports.
  • Interpreting and Translation
    • Assist with the provision of interpretation (Vietnamese-English) for the Regional Asbestos Coordinator, visiting advisors and trainers as required and time permits.
    • Assist with written translation of project/campaign materials and documents as required.
  • Support Services
    • Assist APHEDA and project partners in organizing relevant internal meetings, capacity strengthening trainings, project planning workshops as required.
    • Any other duties as reasonable requested by country manager, Regional Manager and in line with organizational priorities.
