UNDP Small Grant-Civic Education for Indigenous Peoples Pilot Programme

Indigenous peoples in Cambodia face unique challenges in fully realizing their rights to participation and access to information. A combination of linguistic differences, geographic isolation, poverty and little exposure to mainstream Cambodian education means that indigenous peoples are less equipped to participate in political and electoral processes at the national and sub national level.
 
As stated in the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, UNDP recognizes that “Indigenous peoples have the right to maintain and strengthen their distinct political, legal, economic, social and cultural institutions, while retaining their right to participate fully, if they so choose, in the political, economic, social and cultural life of the State” (Article 5). Having ratified the International Convention for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, the Royal Government of Cambodia is committed to respecting the rights of indigenous peoples.
