Short-term Researcher on Rewarding for Environmental Services (RUPES) and Reduced Emission from All Land Uses (REALU)/REDD

The centre generates science-based knowledge about the complex role that trees play in agricultural landscapes and uses its research to ensure that policies and practices benefit the poor and the environment. ICRAF Vietnam is seeking a senior scientist who will join ICRAF technical team in Bac Kan province for 2.5 months, starting from October, 15 and last in December, 31. The scientist
will be in charge for the following tasks:
- Develop RUPES (Rewarding for Environmental Services) mechanism with Leo Keo village, Quang Khe commune, Ba Be district, Bac Kan.
- Participating in bidding and implementing of designing Payment for Environmental Services (PES) activities for IFAD-PES component of IFAD project located in Ba Be, Pak Nam and Na Ri districts in Bac Kan province.
- Participating in Land Use Change analysis and Opportunity Costs Analysis for Bac Kan province, as a part of REALU project in Vietnam.
- Participating in writing project reports and publications.

Detail of assignment and deliverables as follows:
One month: Guiding ICRAF national team in
- the development of RUPES (Rewarding for Environmental Services) mechanism with Leo Keo village, Quang Khe communce, Ba Be district, Bac Kan.
- in Land Use Change analysis and Opportunity Costs Analysis for Bac Kan province, as a part of REALU project in Vietnam.
Outputs: two working papers, one on RES mechanism and one on REALU
One month:
- Team leader in bidding and implementing of designing Payment for Environmental Services (PES) activities for IFAD-PES component of IFAD project located in Ba Be, Pak Nam and Na Ri districts in Bac Kan province.
Outputs: Bidding document and working report
2 weeks: Taking the lead in producing at least one manuscript on the basis of the findings from the activities mentioned above.
The first two months will be based in Bac Kan office, with travels within Bac Kan province while the last two weeks will be in Hanoi office

Requirements/qualifications:
- Ph.D degree in geography, environmental sciences or forestry science.
- Empirical knowledge in research on climate change mitigation and adaptation, in particular on REDD.
- An excellent record of scientific publications and proven research managing ability.
To be successful in this role, you will have:
- Exceptional skills in scientific writing and presentations.
- Work experience in developing countries, particularly in Vietnam
- The ability to manage stressful work situations.
- The ability to work well as part of an international and interdisciplinary team.
- Experience with biophisical modelling work.
- Knowledge of computer programs: Windows, Office suite, Email and Internet.
- Ability to speak, write and work effectively in English. Having Vietnamese language is a merit.
The successful applicant will be offered 2.5-month consultancy mission. Consultancy fee including health insurance is competitive lump-sum package basing qualification and experiences. All other costs such as accommodation during fieldwork, one international travel and local travels, as well as field costs will be covered by ICRAF Vietnam separately.
