Mr. Trinh and Ms. Trine participated in the Global GCAP face to face meeting in Montevideo, and on May 18 Mr. Trinh, Mr. Huong, and Mr. Phong from the Vietnam Fatherland Front and Ms. Trine, from the NGO RC, met to have a brief follow up discussion on the Montevideo meeting and agree on action points.

A GCAP Vietnam has been proposed for the end of May/beginning of June to finalise the GCAP Vietnam plan for 2007. This will include a a feedback from the Global GCAP in Montevideo and a brief written report will be distributed prior to the meeting.

GCAP Vietnam National Coalition Meeting March 30 (updated April 13)

The first GCAP Vietnam National Coalition (NC) of 2007 was hosted by the Fatherland Front Vietnam. The GCAP Vietnam NC is headed by the Fatherland Front and also include 8 INGOs and a some Local NGOs. The meeting included a feedback from the Regional GCAP meeting in Bangkok on March 12 and 13 and a dicuss of the draft GCAP Vietnam activity plan 2007 prepared by the Fatherland Front should be sent out to the whole coalition (please see below). It was agreed that the coalition shall discuss what should be the key policy issues and policy asks/messages for 2007 in relation to what activities the National Coalition should priorities. At the meeting it was proposed and agreed that Mr. Trinh/Fatherland Front, and Mrs. Trine, NGO Resource Centre shall represent the GCAP Vietnam NC at the Glocal GCAP meeting in Montevideo May 3-5.

What is GCAP?

GCAP is a growing alliance of organizations, networks and national campaigns globally committed to eradicating extreme poverty. The loose-alliance began working together in 2005 with the aim of taking action across the world to tackle the root causes of poverty and meet the Millennium Development Goals. At the global level, GCAP aims to put pressure on the World Leaders to take concrete action to deliver on the commitments they have made to reach the Millennium Development Goals and eliminate poverty. The campaign advocates for; Trade justice; Debt cancellation and a major increase in the quantity and quality of aid and; National efforts to eliminate poverty and reach the Millennium Goals that are developed and implemented in a way that is democratic, transparent and accountable to citizens. Objectives of GCAP Vietnam 2006

In Vietnam the GCAP alliance seeks to target the policy makers of pro-poor policies, World leaders for better trade justice for Vietnam, and the wider public to mobilize and participate in the fight against poverty together.

  • Respond to the global call in the month of action (16 Sept. to 17 October 2006)
  • Influence pro-poor policies and their effective implementation
  • Raise awareness and mobilize public participation in poverty reduction

Target Areas of GCAP Vietnam 2006

Trade justice

  • Opposing trade protectionism and trade pressure imposed by developed countries on developing countries, including Vietnam.
  • Raising awareness and mobilizing actions from policy makers in order to protect the poor from the potential negative impacts of WTO accession. This includes areas such as intellectual property rights, plant protections laws, market accession, the monopoly of transnational corporations, etc.
  • Promoting the rights and capabilities to participate in raising ideas and monitoring pro-poor trade policies’ implementation

Governance for Poverty Elimination in Vietnam

  • Promoting the implementation of the Decree on Grassroots Democracy
  • Strengthening the budget transparency process
  • Promoting the effective implementation of policies on children rights
  • Speeding up promulgation and ensure quality and enforcement of the Domestic Violence Law and Gender Equality Law
  • Encouraging Society’s engagement in anti-corruption dialogue and action

News about GCAP activities in Vietnam 2006

GCAP Viertnam has been approved by Central Party Committee and Father land front has been assigned to be the key actor implementing the GCAP Vietnam in the long term.

The Fatherland Front and the Call for Action Against Poverty (GCAP) Vietnam team is jointly organising three events in connection with the People's Grand Union Day (from 16-18/11/206). These events raise awareness about the GCAP content and messages through marching, meetings, and other. The events will take place in Hai Duong, Quang Ninh, Ha Tinh. On November 16 the event was succesfully carried out in Hai Duong. Please click on the following link to review brief report:

On November 21, the GCAP Vietnam team will hold a training workshop on Vietnamese NGOs and GCAP Vietnam. The workshop is organised by PACCOM and Save the Children UK.

On October 8 the GCAP Vietnam allience in partnership with Fatherland front of Lang Son Province successfully organized a meeting and march on GCAP in Lang Son. An event that attracted more than 1090 participants from many districts and communes in Lang Son and successfully (I) mobilised participation of all stakeholders and sectors to the mission of making poverty history (ii) brought the messages on root causes of poverty toward government authorities and the public in the area.
